The person who stabbed five people in Paris on Saturday night, killing one, yelled the Arabic phrase "Allahu Akbar", meaning "God is great", during the attack, city prosecutor François Molins told reporters at the scene.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the alleged attacker was "neutralized" by police and praised officers for the "sang-froid and reaction of the police who neutralised the attacker". "My first thoughts go to the victims of this heinous act".

France has suffered a series of major Islamist attacks including the massacre at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, the November 2015 attacks that killed 130 in Paris, and the 2016 Bastille Day truck attack in Nice that killed more than 80.

In a second tweet, he wrote: "The eyewitnesses then told me police tried to tazer the attacker".

One person has died in the attack, in which three other people have been injured, BFM TV said.

Police said the attacker's motives were still unknown.

The Islamic State (ISIS) claimed accountability for Saturday evening's knife assault saying it was in response to ISIS' requires supporters to focus on members of the US -led navy coalition squeezing the extremists out of Iraq and Syria, the Aamaq information company stated in a press release.

The attack on Saturday reportedly took place near the main opera house in the French capital.

"Tonight, our city has been bruised", Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo wrote on Twitter in French after the attack.

"France is once again paying the price of blood but will not cede an inch to enemies of freedom", Mr Macron said.

The attack comes as France is under a constant threat from terrorism.

One person was killed and two were seriously injured.

A police source confirmed there had been a knife attack without giving any details. Authorities have not revealed the attacker's identity.
