Suspected Israeli strike near Damascus kills nine pro-regime fighters

Sheri EvansMay 10, 2018

Social media users report that Israeli tanks have fired at positions in Syria, Israeli air sorties have been initiated, and that Syrian artillery is shelling Israeli targets.

Iran has held a secure presence in Syria and has backed tyrant Bashar al-Assad during the country's bloody civil war.

Abdel Rahman said the strike had killed at least nine pro-regime fighters, "including members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and other pro-Iranian Shiite militiamen", but it was not possible to independently confirm any toll.

This is the first time Israel directly accuses Iran of firing towards Israeli territory.

On Tuesday night, US President Donald Trump announced that his country would abandon the nuclear deal with Iran and expressed concern in Tehran that Tehran meant to use the opportunity to attack Syria.

Syrian state media have just reported that air-defense systems engaged in response to a new round of Israeli missiles targeting Syria.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has traveled to Moscow where he and President Vladimir Putin will discuss military coordination amid new strikes in Syria blamed on Israel.

Netanyahu had been one of the leading critics of the nuclear accord.

Russian Federation and Iran are Assad's main allies in Syria's civil war.

"For months now, Iran has been transferring lethal weaponry to its forces in Syria, with the objective of striking at Israel", Netanyahu said. Such strikes have become more frequent recently.

They include an attack last month on Syria's T4 air base in Homs province that killed seven Iranian military personnel, for which Tehran has vowed to retaliate.

Later, the Israeli military said in a statement it had called up some reservists but did not elaborate.
